Who are we?

The Balanced Supply of Housing (BSH) Node brings together academic and non-profit community organizations based in Montreal Quebec, Toronto Ontario, and Vancouver British Columbia. We are funded by a five-year Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Partnership Grant. BSH Node research focuses on two areas: 

1. Innovating in responsive land use practices

Exclusionary land practices have privileged a cultural preference for low-density single detached home ownership creating a mismatch in dwellings relative to housing need and demand. We work to find innovative solutions to balancing Canada's housing supply.

2. Reshaping the financialization of housing

The financialization of housing has contributed to inequalities in wealth accumulation, mismatch between housing costs and local earnings, gentrification and displacement, as well as the precariousness of tenure for renters among other factors. We work to identify ways to expose and avoid these negative consequences.
